California's Fashion Industry: Head To Toes, It's Dressed For Growth
A panel discussion with industry executives
California continues to re-imagine and redefine the global fashion scene, putting the state's distinct imprint on everything from apparel to technology. The state is home to thousands of designers, and tens of thousands employed in retailing, fashion and distribution. They create and market everything from shirts, shoes and swimwear that reflect Californians’ love for the outdoors, to accessories that protect and dress up our smartphones and tablets.
Always innovative, our fashion industry – most of which is based in Southern California – is experiencing exceptional growth and innovation.
Come hear how entrepreneurs and seasoned execs are growing their businesses at the October 1 meeting of ACG 101.
Our panelists are:
Jason Mandler, Founder and CEO of Jason Scott, Los Angeles
Nilo Ramos, Vice President and Chief Financial Officer at Parisa Lingerie & Swim, Northridge.
Steve Tiller, CEO and Chief Designer at SeaVees, Santa Barbara
Trent Valladares, Co-Founder at HEX Designs, Oxnard
Jason Mandler, Founder and CEO of Jason Scott, Los Angeles, started his company with no background in clothing design or merchandising. He was working at the William Morris Agency as a trainee when he realized that his true passion was for apparel. He spent his lunch hours at Barney’s and other high-end retailers, studying the merchandise and quizzing knowledgeable salespeople. In 2012 he left the agency to start his company, aiming to create stylish, wearable men’s fashions for the urban lifestyle with luxurious fabrics and expert tailoring.
The Jason Scott line ranges from hooded zip-up sweaters and classic varsity jackets to simple V-neck T-shirts. The line is available at Saks Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdale’s, Barneys Japan and other leading men’s specialty stores. Jason’s plans include launching a women’s collection and a Jason Scott retail store.
Nilo Ramos is Vice President and Chief Financial Officer at Parisa Lingerie & Swim, which makes lingerie and swimwear "for the curvy silhouette." Founded in 1992 by Amir Moghadam, Parisa now has 1,200 employees and offices in Hong Kong and Thailand, and is carried by leading retailers in the U.S., Europe and Asia.
Prior to joining Parisa, Nilo was Vice President of Finance at J.D. Power and Associates, Inc. Previously he was Senior Director of Finance at McGraw-Hill Construction, another business unit of J.D. Power’s parent, The McGraw-Hill Companies. Earlier he was Director of Corporate Planning and Analysis for Bowne Global Solutions, Inc. He received a degree in economics at Rutgers, where he also earned an MBA in Finance.
Steve Tiller, CEO and Chief Designer at SeaVees, co-founded the company in 2010, reviving the former athletic shoe brand that had been launched by Goodyear Rubber Co. in 1964 but had been dormant for more than 40 years. The company’s tagline is "Authentic California," and it aims to evoke the California of the 1960s – surfing, the Beach Boy, Steve McQueen, Dustin Hoffman and other icons of the era. It offers personal shoe fittings in its Santa Barbara stores, but customers must complete their purchases online. Outside the store, in Parking Space Sessions, it hosts pop-up sets to musicians.
A native of Oklahoma, Steve had been Executive Vice President of Product for Stride Rite Corp., which owns the Keds, Saucony and Sperry Top-Siders brands, when he decided to start his own business. On a trip to Japan he found a vintage pair of SeaVees and, for $500, bought what became the inspiration for his new venture.
Trent Valladares co-founded HEX Designs in 2010 with longtime friend, brother-in-law and fellow musician Dan Maravilla. HEX Designs, within August Accessories, develops fashionable and functional products for technology such as iPhone and iPad cases, laptop bags and sleeves, totes, messenger bags and more.
The August Accessories stable of proprietary and licensed brands, including Badgley Mischka, Affliction, KR3W, Spitfire, Antihero, Krooked Skateboarding, Real and Thunder, can be found in boutiques and major store chains around the world. The innovative approach of the HEX line has earned the company numerous design awards as well as multiple design patents.
