In High Gear:  The Auto Industry

A panel of industry experts discusses the outlook
for a sector that continues to accelerate.

Register (Online registration closes October 13th at 2 p.m.)

The auto industry is enjoying good times, thanks to a number of favorable trends. Innovation is changing the driver and passenger experience with advances in safety, navigation, comfort, entertainment, internet connectivity, fuel economy and design. Add in the effects of low interest rates and gas prices, and 2015 U.S. new car sales are on track to hit 17.2 million vehicles.

In Southern California, home to numerous aftermarket manufacturers, suppliers, distributors and retailers, growth is also being driven by consolidation. Private equity investors are pumping cash into the aftermarket sector, fueling both organic growth and acquisitions.

There are some headwinds, including slower growth in China and increasing regulation at the federal and state levels.

The interplay of these opportunities and challenges will be discussed by industry experts at the Oct. 14 breakfast meeting of ACG 101 at the Westlake Village Inn.

Our panelists are:

John Hotchkis, Jr, President & CEO of Hotchkis Performance Inc.

Paul Johnson, founder and Managing Director of Paul Conrad LLC and former CEO of Kelly Blue Book.

Steven Rogers, formerly CEO of K&N Engineering and currently a member of the firm’s Board of Directors.

Our moderator is Paul Louie, Managing Director of Cascadia Capital, LLC.

From left:  Panelists John Hotchkis, Paul Johnson, Steve Rogers, and moderator Paul Louie

John Hotchkis, Jr, founded Hotchkis Performance Inc. 22 years ago, inspired by working beside his road-racing father at Daytona, Sebring, LeMans and other tracks, and by his own 10-year career racing motorcycles and Formula 3 cars. As President and CEO he oversees the design, engineering, testing and manufacturing of high quality performance suspension products for enthusiast-driven cars and trucks

After graduating from Art Center College of Design with a B.S. in Transportation Design, Hotchkis entered the performance industry in 1989 as Marketing Director of Guldstrand Engineering Inc. In 1993 he opened his own firm.

Paul Johnson is the founder and Managing Director of Paul Conrad LLC, which provides advisory services to mid-sized companies seeking to leverage technology and data as strategic accelerators of growth.

He was the CEO of Kelly Blue Book (KBB) for over 10 years at and spearheaded the company’s 2010 sale to Autotrader/Cox. Under his leadership, KBB experienced nearly 700 percent growth in revenue and profits and transitioned from a regional trade-publishing guide to a national, technology-based information, media and market research company. He currently serves on the boards of five privately held companies.

Prior to joining KBB, Mr. Johnson held management positions in marketing and strategic planning at Nestlé, ConAgra, and Chiquita. He holds a BA in Economics from Whitman College and an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.

Steven Rogers, CPA, currently serves on the Board of Directors of K&N Engineering, Inc. where he formerly served first as CFO and then as CEO from 1996 until he stepped down in 2014.

Mr. Rogers is currently a practicing Certified Public Accountant, consultant and active investor in small and medium sized businesses.

Prior to his work at K&N, Steve spent nine years with the CPA firm Ernst & Young, rising to the position of Senior Audit Manager. He is a graduate of California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, and a member of both the California Society and American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

Paul Louie is a Managing Director at Cascadia Capital, LLC where his focus is serving middle market business owners with M&A advisory, capital raises, recapitalizations and debt placements. Paul has a particular focus in the Automotive Aftermarket industry, and also has considerable experience with Asian-based cross-border M&A advisory. He founded Cascadia Capital’s Automotive Aftermarket Practice.

Before Cascadia, Paul served as the Head of the Greater China Practice at Takenaka Partners, a global investment bank. Earlier he lived and worked in the Greater China region as an investment banker and venture capital investor. He speaks Mandarin and Cantonese Chinese.

Paul received a B.S. degree in International Business with an emphasis on Asian Studies from San Diego State University.

Registration online is $35 for ACG Members, $65 for non-members. Registration at the door, if available, is $15 additional.

An IPO Evening in SB: An Informal Discussion about Why – and Why Not – To Go Public

Register ($35 for ACG Members, $50 for others.)

Selling stock through an initial public offering, or IPO, can mean a big payday for entrepreneurs and investors, new capital to accelerate a company’s growth, and an effective tool to reward and retain your key employees.

But "going public" also means taking on major legal, accounting and regulatory obligations and expenses; having shareholders watch your performance; disclosing information that could be useful to your competitors; hoping your share price doesn’t fall so low that someone buys enough stock to gain control of your company; and generally living in a fishbowl

On Tuesday evening, October 20, 2015, several  company leaders – some of whom have taken the IPO route and others who have chosen to remain private – will join us at an informal discussion about the rewards and pitfalls of going public.

Please join us from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. for a fascinating look at an important issue, along with a delightful tasting of harvest wines, on the lovely Union Bank Riviera Deck, Union Bank Plaza, 1021 Anacapa St., Santa Barbara, California 93101.

The program will be moderated by Henry Dubroff, Editor and Founder of the Pacific Coast Business Times.
