 Join ACG British Columbia for an insightful discussion about the challenges, strategies and highlights of transitioning a multi-generational family business. Hear the history and growth stories behind two well-respected lower mainland companies – Mustang Survival and Mainland Sand & Gravel – as well as the process associated with transitioning both management, and ownership, of family enterprises.

Guest Speakers: 

Jim Hartt

Jim is the former CEO and a 25-year veteran of Mustang Survival, a company founded in Vancouver in 1967 and one of the most respected and iconic brands in marine safety. In his role with Mustang Jim was instrumental in the transition of the business from family ownership to independent management, and ultimately the sale of Mustang to the Safariland Group in 2013. 

Laurie Carlson

Laurie is the founder and former owner of Mainland Sand & Gravel, the lower mainland’s largest independent aggregates producer. Over the course of 44 years, Laurie expanded the Mainland family enterprise into one of the most respected aggregates players in Western Canada. He successfully transitioned the business to the second generation as well as facilitated the eventual sale of Mainland to Summit Materials in 2014.

Ken Tarry

Ken is a Senior Vice President with Sequeira Partners, one of Western Canada’s largest independent M&A advisory practices. He has over 15 years of experience advising clients in BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan on business divestitures and ownership transition.
