Overview

Body
Blake Hastings has served as a vice president in charge of the San Antonio Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas since January 2007. He is responsible for the Bank’s activities in the Central and South Texas region, which includes working closely with the branch’s board of directors and providing leadership and oversight for the operating and administrative functions at the San Antonio office, with particular emphasis on its outreach activities to banks, businesses and community-based organizations.

At the ACG event, Blake Hastings presented the statistics pertaining to the economy and the Federal Reserve. According to Blake Hastings, Federal Reserve’s Balance Sheet showed an increase of its assets from 1.02 trillion in Sept 2008 to 4.38 trillion in Aug 2014. Many factors like International restraining US exports, debt ceiling, unemployment, and restrained consumer spending are contributing towards slow economic growth. However, there are some improvements in certain facets of the US economy from the month of June 2014 through August 2014. Year-to-Year Real GDP growth increased from 2.0 in June 2014 to 2.43 in August 2014. Unemployment rate has remained stagnant at 6.2 percent. In comparison to the US economy, the regional economy of Texas showed that the employment growth of Texas was at 3.5 percent whereas the average US employment growth was 2 percent. According to Hastings, employment growth was significantly seen in Energy and Mining industry followed by construction, Business services, and finance and real estate industry. Energy industry, high-tech industry and exports contributed towards accelerating the Texas economy. On the other hand, manufacturing industry and Federal government deteriorated. Among the other cities of Texas, Austin’s employment index is accelerating at much faster pace and hence is much above the national average in Employment Index.
