Cathy Starnes, PhD, Enterprise Growth Officer of WellMed
Cathy Starnes, Ph.D., who has more than twenty years of senior-level executive experience with leading insurance, benefits and management consulting companies, was named Enterprise Growth Officer for WellMed Medical Management in November of 2014.

Starnes oversees Marketing, Sales and Community Relations at WellMed, a 25-year-old physician-led company focused on senior healthcare in Texas and Florida.

WellMed currently operates more than 100 primary and multi-specialty clinics in these states, and supports nearly 6,500 independent physicians in providing quality healthcare for Medicare-eligible patients.

Before coming to WellMed, Starnes spent seven years at SWBC as CEO of the Benefits Consulting and Professional Employer Organization divisions. Prior to that, she spent five years at PacifiCare as VP of Key Accounts.

Among her duties, Starnes will be responsible for collaborating with Dan Comrie (Chief Market Development Officer) on development of new payer relationships in all WellMed markets. WellMed serves nearly 173,000 patients, mostly Medicare-eligible seniors.

Starnes, who was raised in Corpus Christi, has an academic background that provides her with unique insight into healthcare leadership and development overall, and into her new job in particular. In 2004, she earned her Ph.D. in Organizational Leadership from the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, TX with her doctoral dissertation titled: “In Search of a New Paradigm for Healthcare: Consumer Perceptions of Provider Accessibility and Utilization.” This study focused on regression analysis of health outcomes for 641 WellMed patients.

Starnes earned her Master of Business Administration from the University of the Incarnate Word in 1997, and an undergraduate finance degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 1992.

Her core philosophy is “Seize the Day and Light the Way.” Cathy is a graduate of the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce’s “Leadership San Antonio” program. In 2005, the San Antonio Business Journal named her to its “40 Under 40” list of business leaders to watch. In 2009, she earned the Young Professional Award for Business Achievement from the North San Antonio Chamber of Commerce. She was selected for membership into Young Presidents' Organization (YPO) in 2012 and serves on many boards and committees to help promote the future success and dynamic growth of the community.

WellMed Medical Management is a 25-year old physician-led healthcare delivery company serving 173,000+ patients in Texas and Florida through primary care clinics, multi-specialty clinics, and contracted medical management services. Most patients are Medicare-eligible seniors. Founded in 1990 by noted physician Dr. George Rapier III, the vision of the growing enterprise is to change the face of healthcare delivery for seniors.
