Monthly Luncheon - Steve Knopper, Contributing Editor for Rolling Stone

11:30 AM - 1:15 PM

Speaker(s):

Steve Knopper, a contributing editor for Rolling Stone, is the author of Appetite for Self-Destruction: The Spectacular Crash of the Record Industry in the Digital Age (Free Press/Simon & Schuster). Drawing from more than 230 interviews, it's the definitive account of the modern music business, from the adoption of the CD in the early 1980s through the Napster-induced crash and the iPod/iTunes revolution of the early 2000s. The Village Voice called the book "fantastic," and The Boston Globe  declared it "an enthralling read, equal parts anger and regret," adding: "Knopper's writing is sharp, his approach sharper." HBO has optioned the rights and plans to make a movie. Steve was a featured guest on NPR's Fresh Air with Terry Gross and NBC's Last Call with Carson Daly; appeared on the NBC Nightly News, CNBC, and Los Angeles' Tom Leykis Show; and has been quoted as an expert source in  The New York Times, Fortune and Reuters. Steve writes about a variety of topics in addition to the music business. For Wired, he tried to kill his cheapo PC with viruses and bought and sold concert tickets as if day-trading stocks. For Islands,  he explored reggae history in Jamaica. For Details, he documented astronauts' music-listening tastes in space. He has also written for GQ, Esquire, SPIN and National Geographic Traveler. Steve is also an experienced speaker, particularly on how businesses can learn from the record industry's mistakes. Sage Publications, a prestigious academic publisher, and CoBank,  a bank specializing in telecommunications, are among the companies that have hired him to speak at executive conferences. He has lectured to classes at New York University, the University of Colorado and Syracuse University, among others, and appeared on panels at music-business conferences South by Southwest, The Great Escape and, in January 2010, Eurosonic Nooderslag in Groningen, The Netherlands.
