The Crisis in
Medical Research Funding

Public and private funding for medical research in absolute terms has been in steady decline since 1992. Physician-scientists are leaving academia for industry or private medical practice as funding for medical research is harder to obtain. Does the lack of funding and migration of talent mean disaster or is there a new way to fix funding of medical research?

Valley CEOs Speak - April 8, 2010
Fiddling on the Roof Towards a Clean Energy Economy
Barry Cinnamon, CEO, Akeena Solar

You never know the path you’ll take through your career.  It certainly helps when you land in a business that’s always been a passionate factor in your life.  Barry Cinnamon’s career started in solar in the late ‘70s — but he couldn’t continue with his passion because — horrors — energy prices dropped and our country’s first energy crisis simply evaporated.  Barry got back into the solar business in 2001 — and when energy and environmental issues came to the forefront a few years later, he found himself in an ideal position to combine his passion for energy and the environment with his engineering and business skills.  Barry will talk about the path he took in the fast growing and rapidly evolving solar energy industry.

Barry Cinnamon is a long-time advocate of solar power and is a widely recognized solar power expert.  Mr. Cinnamon started his career in solar energy in the late 1970s as a researcher into new flat plate and concentrating collector designs at the Massachusetts institute of Technology (MIT). During the late 1970s and early 1980s, he designed and installed active solar, passive solar and ground coupled heat pump systems.

Mr. Cinnamon’s work in solar power computer modeling led him into the software industry, where he served as CEO of Software Publishing Corporation, and founded Allegro New Media a multimedia software publisher, which he led to IPO in 1995.

Mr. Cinnamon earned a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering from MIT and an MBA degree in Marketing from Wharton. He is a NABCEP Certaified Solar Installer, a licensed California C-46 Solar Contractor, an active member of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group, a member of the Board of Directors of the National Solar Energy Industries Association of California and Solar Energy Industry Association, and is a Senior Fellow of ALF – American Leadership Forum, Silicon Valley.

Why I Joined ACG SV
The Silicon Valley chapter of ACG offers executives an excellent avenue to expand their knowledge and their contacts. I recently attended an ACG session on “Doing Business in China” that was extremely valuable. Although I have conducted business in China for many years, the insight I gained from this particular session was beyond my expectations. It was a working session where executives from a cross section of industries shared best practice ideas and exchanged thoughts on the rapidly changing political, social and environmental landscape in China. ACG events are well organized, attract first-rate speakers and provide an excellent forum for the exchange of ideas.
