Get Involved in Mentoring for the ACG Cup
As we enter our third year of the ACG Cup, we invite and encourage your participation as a mentor to one of the many teams that will be participating this year. As many members can already attest, being a mentor is a fun and fulfilling experience!

The ACG Cup is an investment banking case competition among teams from three Wisconsin business schools (Marquette University, UW-Milwaukee, and UW-Madison). First there is an intra-school competition pitting 4-5 teams against each other to determine a winner for each school. These winners then compete against the top teams from the other universities to determine an overall winner for ACG Wisconsin.

Each team needs at least one mentor, and this year we would like to have 2 mentors per team, so we need significantly more participation from our members. We would ideally like to have one financial/investment banker mentor to review a financial template with the team, teamed with one corporate, PE, or advisor who provides additional perspective. We provide all the tools you’ll need, you just need to show up and share your experience and words of wisdom!

Also, if you know of or work with any MBA students or faculty at any of the participating schools, encourage their participation!

And finally, we encourage you to attend any of the ACG Cup competitions and bring colleagues or younger students/children who have an interest in the topic.

What’s Involved:
  • Guide a team through the ACG Cup competition, providing seasoned advice to students.

Time Commitment:
  • One 1-2 hour mentor training session (to review the process, rules, dates, tools that can be shared with team) (early Nov, date and time TBD);
  • Two 2.5 hour group training sessions with your team at Cleary Gull, followed by one or two 1-2 hour independent sessions with team (late Nov/Dec; first training session targeted for Nov. 20);
  • Attend ACG Cup competition(s) (Intra-school in Jan. and Final in February)

Benefits:
  • Actively contribute your skills and knowledge to future generations of business professionals;
  • Network with other mentors, trainers, and students at the training sessions and competitions;
  • Opportunity to give back to your alma mater;
  • Enhance your knowledge of the M&A pitch process, valuation and financial analysis by attending the training sessions with your team

Mentor Testimonials
I found the Co-mentorship role as rewarding, even educational and fun. I highly recommend pairing Co-Mentors with an investment banking professional, as both will benefit from an educational and relationship standpoint.

I've had the opportunity to co-mentor teams in each of the first two years and found it to be very rewarding on many levels. Partnering with executives provided me the opportunity to get to know them better and hear their perspectives on investment banking pitches. Last year I worked with Brien Christopherson, who mentored the winning MU team, to provide his team with LBO modeling and other financial analysis training. The first year I partnered with Ron Thimm to provide more in-depth financial training for his team. Co-mentoring provides more perspective for the student teams and an opportunity for mentors to build relationships with other ACG members.

The mentoring process for the competition was a terrific opportunity (i) to help students learn about M&A and apply a variety of business skills to a realistic case, (ii) to share our excitement about our profession, and (iii) to work closely with other ACG members on a worthwhile project.

I walked away with new friends and wishing I could have had a similar preparatory experience in business school.
