Panelists will address the state of middle-market health care services investments and the deal environment. They will address the dynamics of navigating major issues that have arisen as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The panelists will also address what subsectors have been affected and how, what the current marketplace for transactions looks like and what the future might hold, developments in the debt markets, valuations, potential for exits, growth potential, and other significant issues.

Caroline Znaniec

Managing Director, CohnReznick Advisory, Healthcare

Caroline Znaniec is a managing director in CohnReznick’s healthcare practice. She has 24 years of healthcare industry and consulting experience with expertise in healthcare strategy and revenue cycle transformation. Caroline works with various healthcare provider organizations including hospitals, health systems, skilled nursing facilities, home health, physician groups and clinics, free-standing providers, payers, private equity groups, and investors of healthcare providers. 

Before joining CohnReznick, Caroline was Principal Owner of Luna Healthcare Advisors LLC. Prior to this, she was a corporate compliance officer for an integrated health system and served as the national lead of revenue integrity for two large consulting groups. Caroline is a recognized industry speaker and author in the areas of healthcare strategy and revenue cycle transformation.

Andrew Colbert

Senior Managing Director, Ziegler and Company

Andrew Colbert joined Ziegler in 2006 as a founding member of Ziegler’s Corporate Finance Healthcare practice. He specializes in advising healthcare services and healthcare information technology companies on a spectrum of strategic and financing alternatives including mergers and acquisitions, capital raising transactions and partnership development. Andrew is also involved in Ziegler’s principal investing efforts and serves on the Strategic Leadership Committee at Ziegler.

Andrew takes pride in developing long-term relationships with his clients and brings creative structuring insights and deep domain expertise to achieve premium outcomes. He has been engaged in over 50 transactions totaling over $3 billion in value; including sell-side and buy-side representation, strategic partnerships, public equity financings, private placements, joint ventures, leveraged buyouts and fairness opinions.  

Andrew has completed numerous M&A and capital raising transactions for healthcare companies across a wide spectrum of healthcare subsectors including healthcare information technology, physician groups/MSOs (radiology, emergency medicine, anesthesia, hospitalist, etc.), telemedicine, wellness, managed care, provider and payor outsourcing, and revenue cycle management.  Prior to joining Ziegler, Andrew was an investment banker in the healthcare group at Friedman, Billings, Ramsey & Co.

He is the author of 14 publications in the following press and media outlets: AuntMinnie.com, Axis Imaging News, Becker’s Hospital CFO Report, Healthcare Business News, Imaging Technology News, Radiology Today Magazine, Advance Healthcare Network. Andrew is the recipient of the Emerging Leaders Award by the M&A Advisor. He is a frequent speaker at many conferences and industry events, including ACG, HIMSS, HFMA ANI, Health2.0 and RBMA, among others. He graduated magna cum laude from Colgate University with a B.A. in international relations and a minor in economics. He holds Series 7 and 63 securities licenses. Andrew also serves as a mentor to the Blueprint Health startup accelerator in New York City.

Phil Olsen

Partner, Business Development, Waud Capital Partners

Phil Olson leads the business development efforts at Waud Capital; responsible for overseeing origination for both Healthcare Services and Technology and Business Services.  Prior to joining WCP, Mr. Olson was previously in investment banking with William Blair, where he spent 13 years and helped build the firm’s Financial Technology practice.  He began his career in investment banking with Merrill Lynch.  Mr. Olson holds a B.S., with high honors, in Finance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and an M.B.A. from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.

Lauren Ruane

Lauren Ruane

Managing Director – Co-Head of Middle Market Healthcare Banking, J.P. Morgan

Lauren Ruane has been with J.P. Morgan for 15 years serving in a variety of capacities in the Investment Bank and Commercial Bank.  Prior to her current role in the Commercial Bank, Lauren was responsible for the Healthcare Services & IT sectors within Equity Capital Markets in terms of origination, execution, and client relationship efforts.  Her product expertise spans IPOs, follow-ons, convertibles, private placements, dual-track processes, and SPACs (Special Purpose Acquisition Companies).  Lauren previously covered the Consumer & Retail and Energy sectors in ECM and was also based in São Paulo, Brazil for two years with responsibility for equity origination and execution across Latin America.  She was also part of the Financial Institutions Investment Banking coverage group.  She received a B.S. in Finance from Penn State University.

Moderator, Ari Markenson

Partner, Co-Chair, Health and Life Sciences Industry Group, Winston & Strawn LLP

Ari Markenson has over 20 years of experience in the areas of health care, law, and business. He advises health care industry clients, including providers and payers, on a broad range of matters with significant experience in the representation of health care providers and suppliers. He represents private equity firms on health care transactions, including significant regulatory, M&A, and portfolio company work, including working in an outside general counsel role. He advises clients on mergers, acquisitions and divestitures, due diligence, corporate matters, legal and regulatory compliance issues, including requirements and conditions for participation; fraud and abuse; HIPAA; and survey, certification, and enforcement issues. Ari assists clients with Medicare, Medicaid, managed care, and private insurance reimbursement issues, and he represents providers in administrative proceedings, acquisitions, obtaining certificate of need approval and state licensure.

Ari writes frequently for industry publications and teaches healthcare law and other health care management and policy topics at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health and the School of Health Sciences Practice at New York Medical College.

Ari received his B.A. from Syracuse University in 1993, his J.D. from Brooklyn Law School in 1996, and his M.P.H., Health Policy and Management from Columbia University School of Public Health in 1998.
