Dear ACG New York Members:
I am honored and humbled to be named President of the Board for the ACG New York Chapter, and I am looking forward to working with all of you as we navigate these unprecedented times.
Prior to becoming a member in November, 2011, I attended several one-off ACG-NY events. I had recently made a career pivot and was hungry for the opportunity to learn more about the deal-making community, and I was looking for a group of like-minded professionals to network with as well as for volunteering opportunities. Over the past few years, I have grown personally and professionally, and ACG has become integral to my business. It has enabled me to continue to grow and develop my network of quality professionals and business opportunities, and I have enjoyed contributing to ACG by introducing other professionals to the organization. I am grateful for the industry knowledge I have gained and look forward to continuing to work on behalf of the organization and the Board.
I am a firm believer that the best way to get the most out of an organization is to get involved. I have enjoyed participating on several committees and was pleased to be included in two of the strategic planning retreats where my knowledge of the organization and its purpose continued to grow. I oversaw the transition of the Champions Awards and volunteered on several committees, and was pleased to be invited onto the Board, which gave me an opportunity to give back to the organization. As a Board member, I have served as VP of Programming, Executive Vice President and now President.
Over the last few years, our Board oversaw several initiatives and changes to ACG-NY. We eliminated some programs, combined others, and incorporated more one-on-one deal meetings into our existing events. We also expanded Wine Tasting into Middle-market Week, and added PE to PE and GP/LP events. In October of last year, we hired a new Executive Director, Vikash Magdani, to bring new and fresh ideas, incorporate technology, expand our speaker roster, and increase membership and sponsorship. None of us could have anticipated the pandemic and the unprecedented disruption it has caused to our economy in general and specifically to the deal-making community, but we are on a strong financial footing and well-positioned to able to adjust and have nearly seamlessly converted to virtual programs and events.
I am focusing my term as President on two major themes: “Virtual Dealmaking” and Inclusion. We anticipate and are planning for our 2020/21 events to be all virtual, and we will continue to ensure that the “Deal” is the star of any ACG New York programming and will further invest in dealmaking events. That said, we are leveraging technology to ensure that our signature one-on-one deal forums and our virtual networking events are of the highest quality, and we will continue to explore ways to make “virtual handshakes” the new normal.
With regards to inclusion, in just the past few months our virtual programming has enabled us to expand our speaker roster and broaden our community engagement. My goal this year is to continue to focus on reaching out to a broad network of industry professionals and seek ways to engage and include those professionals who have been underrepresented. During the past few years we have made significant strides in this area, and I am confident that we can continue.
I know I cannot do any of this alone, and I’m so grateful for an amazing board and army of volunteers who support our chapter. But we still need your help. If you have an idea for a speaker, sponsor, topic or suggestions for ways to improve, please reach out to me. I would also encourage you to reach out to your own personal networks as well as other colleagues and professionals, and share information about information about upcoming ACG events and invite them to join our amazing organization – 60 years strong!
Going back to when I signed up for membership in November, 2011, I never thought I would address this extraordinary community as Chapter President. I am excited to lead and look forward to meeting you at an ACG New York event – virtually for now, but hopefully in person soon!
