Background of the Florida ACG Capital Connection Conference
The Florida ACG Capital Connection is an annual event of the four Florida chapters of the Association for Corporate Growth (ACG) focused on bringing growth to middle market businesses. The Conference attracts representatives from:
- Private equity firms
- Investment banks
- Commercial banks
- Middle market companies seeking growth capital
- Accounting firms
- Law firms
- Marketing/Promotional firms
- Insurance brokers
- Other Transaction Professionals
Each year about 600 attendees gather with about 65% being from outside of Florida to meet and build relationships leading to transactions which foster corporate growth in a broad variety of industries including technology, healthcare, hospitality, real estate, retail, aviation and manufacturing.
The Conference features events designed to promote networking, including speakers, educational breakout sessions and golf and tennis.
Prominent speakers at the Conference have included Robert Johnson of BET, Arthur Laffer (of the Laffer Curve), Governor Rick Scott, Steve Forbes, Editor in Chief of Forbes Media, Alonzo Mourning and many others.
Our 2019 keynote speaker is Lawrence Levy, former CFO and director of Pixar Animation Studios, who led the company in its initial public offering and sale to Disney. Mr. Levy will provide insight on the process by which he led two initial public offerings for prominent tech companies (he also guided Electronic Imaging in its IPO). In order to succeed while leading Pixar, he had to learn to work collaboratively with Steve Jobs, one of the most notoriously difficult but successful innovators of our time. After leaving Pixar, Mr. Levy studied Indo-Tibetan meditation practices founding a non-profit called Jupiter Foundation. In his recent, Harvard Business Review article, “Finding the Healthy Tension Between Being Confident and Collaborative,” he explored blending business and meditation. In his presentation he will discuss such topics as creativity, collaboration and finding a healthy work-life balance.
Description of Certain Events at the Conference
Private Equity Panel - We are planning a panel of deal participants and professionals led by Weatherford Capital that will include prominent family offices that participate as lead and co-investors in private equity investments.
Emerging Growth Companies - The Conference will feature FastPitch, a competition of emerging growth companies looking to become the next unicorn investment, comparable to Uber and Magic Leap and other Florida success stories.
Women’s Forum - Our second annual Women’s Forum will focus on a topic relevant to women in business, both corporate and financial, and include a speaker or panel of women entrepreneurs, women who lead or have led significant businesses, and women who hold prominent positions with financial service firms, including private equity, venture capital, commercial and investment banking, and other business professionals.
Emerging Young Professionals - We will also have an event for our Emerging Young Professionals which will provide networking opportunities to accelerate their advancement into the world of dealmaking.
Industry Roundtables - The Conference will include industry roundtables on a variety of topics. Past topics have included cybersecurity, middle market M&A updates, opportunities in foreign trade and investment, and cryptocurrencies and the Blockchain.
Other - The Conference will include additional networking opportunities, including golf and tennis, and a closing reception featuring a catamaran cruise on the inter-coastal waterway adjacent to the resort.
The details of these events are still being determined and may be different than as described above.
Attendees, exhibitors and sponsors are welcome to attend most of these events (though the Women’s Forum, golf and tennis and certain first day networking events require separate registration and fees) and mix and mingle with some of the country’s top deal makers.
Rob Brighton, our Conference chair, and Sherry Smith, the Conference Administrator, are available to discuss the Conference, including information about sponsoring, exhibiting, and attending the event.
