Eavesdropping on 12-Year-Olds: Lessons in Human-Centered Design and Driving Business ROI

Please join Jamie Sterling, VP of Product, Research & Development at Carnegie Learning, and Kim Anderson, Human-Centered Design Director at RSM, for a fireside chat moderated by Nick DeHainaut, Business Development Director at RSM.

Through the telling of the innovative product development journey Carnegie Learning’s MATHstream undertook, including an empathetic eye on the user, Jamie and Kim learned how to engage 12-year-old subject matter experts to deliver innovative software solutions. They will share the benefits of embracing human-centered design, including:

  • Speed to Market
  • Cost avoidance coupled with earlier revenue gains
  • Noteworthy innovation, leading to recognition, awards, and grant monies
  • Greater customer satisfaction and retention

While using a human-centered design approach, in this case, resulting in improved learning outcomes and happier students, teachers, and caregivers, a human-centered design methodology can be applied to all industries — finance, retail, higher education, construction, you name it.

Jamie and Kim will describe specific techniques for immediate consideration, discuss their collaborative dynamic as external partners, and offer our audience their experience as female leaders in technology, innovation, and strategy.

Kim Anderson

RSM
Director, Human-Centered Design

Kim has over 22 years of experience in people and project management, with an emphasis on Agile software and product development. Kim’s career started in 2001 in Washington, DC, as a business and technology consultant with KPMG Consulting and, later, Booz Allen Hamilton, for federal government clients. She pivoted from being client-facing in 2010 to become the first product manager of a certified Electronic Health Record (EHR) software program at what was then a small company in Pittsburgh, PA, called Net Health. Under her leadership, the EHR became Meaningful Use certified and Net Health’s growth strategy capitalized on the functionality core to all EHRs to increase its client base by incorporating other specialty care clinical documentation into the product. During her nine years with Net Health, Kim spent significant time in the field observing the software in use, establishing relationships with clients and vendors, vetting new feature concepts, and establishing the end user feedback loop.

Kim returned to client service as a part of RSM’s human-centered design practice. Kim acts as the delivery partner, working alongside cross-functional teams of designers, researchers, strategists and engineers. One of her current partnerships is with Carnegie Learning (CL), an innovative education technology and curriculum solutions provider for K-12 math, literacy and ELA and world languages. The RSM team collaborated with CL on an award-winning middle school math product and continues to support CL’s innovation team to prototype concepts such as student access to live tutoring, a professional learning platform for educators and teacher access to open education resources.
