Peter served in the Parliament of Canada for nearly 2 decades, 10 as a cabinet minister (2006-2015) in Harper Government. He served in high-profile portfolios, including as Minister of Justice Justice & Attorney General, Department of National Defence, Foreign Affairs, and the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA). He chaired the Canadian National security committee and served on numerous cabinet committees for 10 years. He was first elected in 1997, and returned by his constituents to Parliament in 5 consecutive elections. 

After serving as House Leader for the PC Party of Canada for 6 years he was elected National Leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada in 2003. 

Prior to politics He worked as a lawyer in Nova Scotia. Called to the bar in 1990. He served as a public defender and a Crown Attorney. He currently works with the Atlantic Canadian law firm McInnes Cooper as Senior Counsel and with Deloitte Canada. Mr. MacKay provides strategic advice on projects related to the firm’s leading Government & Public Services Industry practice. He focuses on defence modernization, justice reform, illicit finance, infrastructure, and economic development and recently took on the lead role for Arctic strategy. He serves on several National volunteers boards including Big Brothers Big Sisters, Wounded Warriors, Integrity Initiatives International, and previously on Soecial Olympics & Boost, Child & Youth Advocacy. He coaches minor sports in Pictou County.
