OUTSIDE OF THE OFFICE ... When not working I enjoy socializing with family and friends, expanding on my culinary skills, and travelling. As you can imagine, being a Commercial Banker carries an element of intensity that is important to balance.

I enjoy sharing that I am a farm kid from North Dakota.  I find that my upbringing resonates with many, and is a different way of alluding to my foundational values and work ethic.

How has COVID-19 forced change in your business?

As most businesses have experienced, Midcountry Bank had to “pivot” and find new ways to support our clients through unchartered waters.  What I found especially energizing was the willingness for businesses and individuals to collaborate to solve problems together, to be creative, and to accomplish more than they would have in a normal environment.   I also think this experience has reinforced the importance of business owners to have a good relationship with their bank so access to financial expertise is readily available when they need it.

What guidance are you giving to clients during these uncertain times?

Now more than ever I tell clients to keep an eye on their liquidity.  “Cash is king” is my mantra, particularly during recessionary periods.    I also encourage all business owners to make sure to develop a solid relationship with their banker.  Look to your banker as an advisory resource.  Regardless of the economic climate, your banker can provide an unbiased perspective and help you make good decisions as you grow your business.

What's been your favorite or most memorable moment of your career so far?

My business connections have proven to go beyond my career, allowing me to participate in causes that are important to me personally as well.  One excellent example is my board membership with Angel Foundation.  Not only do I work alongside other like-minded professionals, I am able to give back to an organization that provides important services for families facing cancer treatment.

My ACG Minnesota Membership ... Being a member of ACG has allowed me to connect with a valuable network of professionals which has resulted in new business opportunities.  It has also allowed me to develop some new friendships along the way.

I'd advise new members to show up and be seen – and remember your business cards!  You joined this organization for the same reason as most others – to network, so don’t be afraid to start a conversation!  To get the most out of the experience, you will need to make the effort to find personal connections, to follow up and to foster your connections over time.
