Dr. Mahmood S. Shivji

Nova Southeastern University’s (NSU) Halmos College of Arts & Sciences

Dr. Shivji is Professor of Conservation Biology at Nova Southeastern University’s (NSU) Halmos College of Arts & Sciences. He is also Director of NSU’s Guy Harvey Research Institute and Save Our Seas Foundation Shark Research Center. He received his undergraduate degree at Simon Fraser University in Canada and his Ph.D., from the University of Washington. He has been a faculty member at NSU since 1993. He received the NSU Student Life Achievement (STUEY) Professor of the Year Award in 2006, the Broward Business Alliance World Class Faculty Award in 2007, the NSU President’s Distinguished Professor Award in 2012, and the NSU Provost’s Research and Scholarship Award in 2017.

Dr. Shivji’s work through the Guy Harvey Research Institute and Save Our Seas Foundation Shark Research Center combines hi-tech genomics research with fieldwork to make scientific discoveries and solve problems pertaining to the management and conservation of sharks, billfishes and coral reef ecosystems, and to explore the biodiversity of very deep-sea fishes.

Dr. Shivji’s research frequently receives worldwide media attention, and has appeared in venues such as TIME Magazine, Newsweek, the Economist, New York Times, Washing Post, USA Today, Forbes, WebMD, National Geographic, World Economic Forum, NBC Today Show, ABC World News, National Public Radio and the BBC. His work is also on exhibit at the Smithsonian Museum’s Sant Ocean Hall in Washington DC.
