How to Make Earthquakes: The What, Where, How, and Who Cares of Injection-Induced Seismicity

Was that a man-made earthquake or a naturally occurring earthquake? Now, we can tell the difference.

Texas can now objectively answer that question because we have TexNet.
TexNet is the biggest, most widespread, most up-to-date earthquake monitoring network that studies seismic activity in real time. (www.beg.utexas.edu/texnet)

The monitoring system was built by UT (with an assist from SMU, A&M, and
SwRI) with state funds. The project was launched because of the increased number of earthquakes in the DFW, South Texas and Permian Basin areas in last decade. The research from TexNet can separate natural occurring events versus induced seismic activity from wastewater injection wells in the oil patch.

With TexNet now live, come hear recent findings from this innovative program by joining us on January 10th to hear UT project leader, Dr. Peter Hennings, and learn what the research is showing about seismic activity across the state.

SPEAKER:
Dr. Peter Hennings is a Research Scientist at The University of Texas Bureau of Economic Geology where he is Principal Investigator at the the Center for Integrated Seismicity Research. Peter joined UT's BEG following retirement after 25 years in the petroleum industry where he worked as a research scientist at Mobil Oil and Phillips Petroleum; and, technical manager at ConocoPhillips.

Peter received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Texas A&M University and his Ph.D. from The University of Texas at Austin.
