On August 27th, the Corporate Peer Group members gathered to hear Anissa Elsay at Nazdar, Erica Brune at Lever1 and Craig Woodson at MMC discuss how their companies attract and retain talented employees and the challenges they face in a tight and competitive market.

Anissa spoke specifically about Nazdar’s experience offering flexible work schedules structured as both part-time on their mid-shift and a weekend shift.  These flexible options have increased the pool of candidates who want to supplement income, including college students who want to make money while attending school.  Nazdar has also gained traction in recruiting new talent by hosting weekend open houses, promoted using yard signs and social media, in addition to an employee referral program for existing employees.

MMC has gained traction via relationships with local high schools, specifically on educating students on workforce opportunities, career paths and assistance with certifications and other training requirements.  Craig also highlighted MMC’s compensation approach to incentivizing top performers.  [Other specific thoughts?]

A common theme brought into perspective by Erica was the need to consistently utilize social media, employee surveys and demonstrating a career path and importance of company culture in retention of employees.

The participants unanimously agreed that companies have to play an active role in recruiting and retention, as they can tell the company story and discuss culture better than a third party and need to frequently benchmark themselves to the market.
