Over the past decade, the number of high-net worth family offices have risen for a variety of reasons, and as a result impacted the middle-market M&A and business communities.  Our expert panel will discuss the evolution and drivers of this trend, including, how family offices differentiate from traditional private equity firms, best of firm practices, investment strategies, and challenges and opportunities that family offices face in the market.

Dan Ellis is an Executive Search Consultant with a top placement rate providing guidance to middle-market companies and advisory firms with a special focus on working with private equity groups and their portfolio companies.  Dan provides unbiased advice and exclusive opportunities to C-Level executives, senior management and experienced professionals in the accounting, finance, operations and related functional areas.  Dan consults with clients and candidates to understand and analyze each situation to build a meaningful, genuine, and long-term relationship.
 
Prior to joining Townsend Search Group, Dan spent over eight years in public accounting and consulting where he provided transaction advisory and accounting services to privately-held, middle-market companies, across a variety of industries.  Dan earned his BBA from Western Michigan University and is a registered Certified Public Accountant.  He is a Board Member of the ACG Detroit Chapter and Co-Chair of the Programming Committee.  Dan is an avid skier, endurance athlete, outdoor enthusiast, and resides in Traverse City with his wife and son.

Robert Grimaldi has 20 years of experience in family office operations and leadership, institutional asset management, private equity and venture capital.  Rob is currently Managing Director of Campania LLC, advising a NYC based family office on operations, direct investments and strategic partnerships.  Additionally, Rob is a co-founder of diagQ, a biotech firm creating novel solutions for next generation research and President of The Fallen and Wounded Soldier Fund, a non-profit that supports Michigan-based veterans.  Rob is a graduate of Wayne State University in Detroit MI.

Edward V. Marshall is a Director in the Global Family Office Group at Citi Private Bank. He advises families across North America on best practices in family office and investment management. The Global Family Office Group serves more than 1,200 families around the world, providing a wide range of financial, advisory and educational resources to family offices of all sizes and complexity. Previously, Edward served as Relationship Manager and member of the ultra high net worth team at Credit Suisse. He started his career in the public sector working for the Federal government in the US and abroad. Edward has an MBA from New York University’s Stern Graduate School of Business and a Bachelor of Science in Human Biology from Michigan State University. He speaks Polish, Russian and Ukrainian.

Mike Vlasic has been an investor and business operator since 1988.  He has been involved in the entire spectrum of investment disciplines:  including asset allocation, investment strategy, manager and investment selection, due diligence, and performance measurement with particular concentration on private equity and direct investments. His operations experience includes construction, real estate investment and development, equipment leasing and finance.  He has been involved with three successive oil & gas exploration and production start-ups. He led his family’s businesses and family office from 1989 to 2013.

Currently:

  • Principal of NBT Investments LLC (a family office and investment entity)
  • Director of VILLco Management
  • He serves on the Board of the Bessemer Trust Company and affiliates

Previously:

  • He served as Chief Executive for Vlasic Investments (and CEO of VILLco Management) from 1989 through 2013.
  • He is founder of MAV Development Company and served as President and then Chairman 1988 – 2013
  • He has served on several publicly held company boards including Texoil, GeoResources and Halcon Resources Inc.
  • He has served on the investment committees of venture capital and private equity funds, and HV Capital Investors (a direct lending firm)

Mike earned a Master in Business Administration degree from the University of Michigan and undergraduate degree in Engineering from Brown University.

Mike is married and has three adult children
