As Q1 2021 kicked off, the astonishing highs of capital markets and dealmaking activity during the pandemic-hit year of 2020 were eclipsed, as companies have tapped into continued demand for investment returns. Moving into the final quarter of the year equity capital markets activity totaled US$956.8 billion during the first nine months of 2021, a 25 percent increase compared to the first nine months of 2020 and the strongest opening period for global equity capital markets activity since records began in 1980. By number of issues, 5,363 ECM offerings were brought to market during the first nine months of 2021, a 25 percent increase compared to a year ago and an all-time record.

Meanwhile, overall global debt capital markets activity totaled US$7.8 trillion, down 7 percent compared to the first nine months of 2020 and the second consecutive nine-month period to surpass US$7.0 trillion in issuance. The number of new offerings brought to market during the first nine months of 2021 totaled 21,568, a two percent decline compared to the first nine months of 2020.
