The second panel in our ESG Series discusses why the Social and Governance focus of ESG investing is an important consideration in PE and the Middle Market and could be the difference between a good investment and a great one. While ESG could be called ‘Doing the Right Thing’; it also puts focus on the risks that could injure a company if it fails to properly protect itself from itself (either culturally, systemically or behavior-ly), with risks to reputation, lawsuits or business interruption. This was most recently seen during the pandemic where researchers found significant increase in stock prices when a company did the right thing by, for example, providing sick leave to COVID-afflicted workers, prepaying suppliers to ensure they stayed in business, and shifting production to address the immediate needs of the pandemic. These proactive social investments likely lead to businesses successfully surviving post-pandemic, as they will have won the loyalty of the workforce, supply chain, and customers, therefore increasing profits.
