Building a Vertically Integrated Empire 
David Trott didn't just build one of the largest specialized law firms in the country, he created a vertically integrated real estate empire. From law, title and document processing to legal publishing, residential home sales, technology, accounting and staffing services, he grew his family business from 15 employees to more than3,000 before serving in the United States Congress. In this fireside chat, David along with his longtime business and tax attorney Bill Sider, will share engaging and entertaining stories about building, buying and exiting and lessons learned during his time in Washington.

Dave Trott, Chairman, ATA National Title, rejoined ATA after serving in the United States 
House of Representatives. While in Congress Dave served on the Foreign Affairs, Judiciary and 
Financial Services committees. He introduced legislation that was signed into law reforming 
Dodd Frank and improving Financial Privacy Disclosure Rules. He also worked on issues 
related to bankruptcy reform, Human Rights abuses in the Democratic Republic of the Congo 
and the Armenian Genocide. 

Prior to serving in Congress Dave owned, or served as President or 
Chairman, of several businesses, including Trott & Trott, one of the largest law firms in the 
country specializing in the representation of the real estate finance industry; ATA National Title; 
Coldwell Banker Weir Manuel, a large residential broker in Michigan; National Default 
Exchange, a division of Dolan Media (NYSE:DM), a company providing technology, accounting 
and staffing services to law firms; First American Financial (NYSE:FAF), Default Title 
Division; and Wetzel Trott, one of the leading companies in the country providing loan 
underwriting and quality control services to the mortgage banking industry. 

Mr. Trott has been a visiting lecturer at the University of Michigan and Eckerd College, and an Adjunct Professor at 
Florida Gulf Coast University. He has also served on several boards including the Trott Family 
Foundation, Detroit Country Day, Community House, Michigan Chamber of Commerce, 
Karmanos Cancer Center, Keep Our Republic, Levin Center for Oversight and Democracy. 
Detroit Legal News, and the State Building Authority. He obtained a B.A from the University of 
Michigan and a J.D. from Duke University.

Bill is an attorney in our Tax practice group, where he focuses on structuring
and executing sophisticated, tax-efficient transactions for a diverse client
base that includes REITs, DSTs, UP-C entities, private equity sponsors,
pass-through entities and entrepreneurs. His practice spans complex
transactional planning, partnership and corporate tax matters, and strategic
tax counseling designed to maximize value and mitigate risk in high-stakes
transactions.


Bill is a recognized thought leader who has written and lectured extensively
on a broad range of tax topics, including REITs, limited liability companies,
real estate workouts, equity compensation arrangements and angel
investment strategies. He collaborates closely with the firm’s corporate, real
estate and securities attorneys to develop and implement innovative tax
strategies that maximize transaction economics.

For more than three decades he has counseled and represented hundreds of clients in dozens of industry verticals nationally and is among the most experienced business to business and real estate focused PR and marketing professionals in the country. He is a frequent author, speaker and moderator on a wide variety of business, real estate and PR, marketing and crisis communication topics.

Mark serves as President of the Detroit chapter of the Association for Corporate Growth (ACG). He was inducted into the PRSA Hall of Fame in 2023 and currently serves as an executive board member and the development chair for The Heat and Warmth Fund (THAW).
