Karamu House

Karamu House, located on E. 89th Street and Quincy Avenue in Cleveland, is recognized as America's oldest producing Black theatre-founded in 1915 by Russell and Rowena Jelliffe, a married Jewish couple and pair of Oberlin College graduates. Since its founding, Karamu has been at the center of social justice by providing a space (and stage) for African American artists.

Today, Karamu's mission is to produce professional theatre, provide arts education, and present programs for all people while honoring the African American experience. We are a place of joyful gathering (the meaning of Karamu in Swahili), where people from different races, religions, and economic backgrounds come together through the arts.

Event Secondary Body

In honor of Black History Month, ACG members and friends are invited to join Karamu House for an exclusive preview of its latest theatre production: "Looking Back to Move Forward: A Reflection and Celebration of America's Oldest Black Producing Theatre."

Following the production, we will make room for you to have deeper conversations with key members of the Karamu House. We do hope that you will join us for this production and our discussion.
